You did make a backup, right? Choose restore, select the latest backup from the drop-down menu, and click the Continue button to proceed. Apple will then spend a few moments linking your device to your Apple ID. If you do so, you can have your device back up all essential settings to your iCloud account; if you ever need to restore, you can do so over Wi-Fi without an additional computer. You can also elect to have your device back up to your computer using iTunes.
This will enable location monitoring for your device, allowing you to find it using your Apple ID and the Find My iPhone app , should it go missing. And with that, congratulations! The Software Update process for iOS 5 is remarkably similar; but instead of going to the App Store, you go to the Settings app for any system updates.
Like the App Store, your device perpetually checks for new software updates in the background. There, you see some brief information about the update and a button to install it. You can also force the system to check for an update by navigating to the Software Update pane.
To install these updates, however, you need to have at least 50 percent battery life on your device, or have it plugged into a power source. And just as a friendly reminder: Even though you can install these updates anywhere, you should always always, always back up your device before you do. You can use Wi-Fi Sync to back up to your computer, or, if you have iCloud Backup enabled, you can use that. Some apps that show updates available, do not work with this version of ios.
I accidentally updated Stanza and it stopped working. I had to find an older version of Stanza in my Time Machine backup and reinstall it on my iPhone. My iPhone 3Gs has limited battery life, so I don't want to impact is further by updating to ios 5. I would buy a new iPhone, but 3 year contracts are standard in Canada, so it would cost too much to upgrade my phone. Sadly, the developer is the one who will have to fix this, and you cannot do anything without jail breaking it and if you know code making changes to the firmware.
However, read the release notes and take care to make sure it works on iOS 4. Usually the developer will put something in it about compatibility. Apple has fixed this problem systematically in September by letting developers maintain older versions of their applications on the iTunes store to support OS that are older than the current version. When you go to update an app and the store detects that your OS isn't the required OS and there is also an older version, you will see an alert and be able to select the older app for your older OS.
Worst case, you can review your past purchases and find download links if you haven't hidden that download. Even then, you can go to your account and un-hide any hidden purchases. Have you tried removing all the songs from the device and just allowing a handful to sync? Improve this answer. I will try that tonight when I get home — Canadian Luke Nov 17 '11 at That has worked. I can listen to my music now — Canadian Luke Nov 18 '11 at Simply restore your iPhone. Takes me an hour and a half with a USB cable to restore. I'm waiting for the wifi sync to finish first then illtry this — Canadian Luke Nov 18 '11 at I'm sure this would work, but I just finished the wifi sync after taking bmike's advice, and it worked so I can't test yours.
Actually a restore can place the same corrupt iTunes database file on the device after the restore. It could fix some of the potential causes of Luke's issue, but certainly won't fix some causes of this issue. The steps I outlined were more surgical at attacking the specific issue.
A restore is good general advice, just not the best for this specific situation. Of course, restoring a corrupt backup won't correct the problem. However, considering how long it usually takes to pinpoint a problem with the syncing process, I've ended up usually advising restore as a quicker solution.
In the worst case, you'll have to do the research part afterwards. Anyway, your more precise solution was elected, and I am glad it was in this case : — MattiSG Nov 18 '11 at The Overflow Blog. Featured on Meta. Stack Overflow for Teams is now free for up to 50 users, forever.

I've gone to that page as it specifically talks about updating from ios 4 to a later ios. Now you may know what they mean by erase in this instance but I was just asking the question as I've never done that before. If I've missed it then I apologise. This forum, like many others I belong to is normally full of extremely helpful and patient people and we are very lucky that that is the case.
However I find your reply arrogant, self opinionated and pre-judgemental. If that's all I'm going to get from this forum, I'll stick with ios4 and invest in a Samsung when I can afford it. The link I posted previously specifically addressed how to update from any version of iOS to the current version of iOS and says nothing about needing to erase and restore the device. So why do you insist on using the document that is no longer valid is it specifically references updating from iOS 4 to iOS 5 which cannot happen.
